Temperaments and Nature
Ever heard of temperaments? Or maybe the actual question should be, do you know your temperament? It’s the 21st century and in contrast to the expectation that every human being should know their temperaments, a whooping 45% of individuals do not know or understand their temperaments. It’s not entirely a big deal, but a necessary and just in case you’re among that category of persons, then this article was made for you. If you’re not, please enjoy the read too. So,
WHAT ARE TEMPERAMENTS?
Temperaments are a person’s normal way/manner of thinking, behaving or reacting. In simple terms, it’s the reason why we act the way we do. Temperaments define our habits, our characters and advanced abilities. However, temperaments are not supposed to make us who we are, because as always, every temperament has its advantages and disadvantages. While some persons may possess different traits, some persons may possess same traits in proportions. Temperaments are actually a great deal of our lives we shouldn’t ignore, but rather harness, build and grow.THE TEMPERAMENTS.
Temperaments are divided into FOUR(4) main types according to statistics carried out on the human specie by philosophical scientists. They include:
- The Sanguine
- The Melancholic
- The Choleric and,
- The Phlegmatic
As they come naturally from inception, it may be quite difficult to cultivate a temperament that’s not inborn and speaking of naturally, our temperaments can be compared to basic elements of nature that we know, which are Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
So, in this article, I would only be explaining temperaments in line with the elements of nature, but any more information needed on this topic can be gotten from Tim LaHaye‘s book “Why You Act The Way You Do“
The qualities and traits of each element listed here has been aligned to suit each major temperament and on a personal note, I’ve come to these conclusions.
1. THE SANGUINE AS FIRE.
The Sparky, noisy and loud sanguine can be compared to a wild fire. It’s burn and bright is heard and seen in the quietest of woods expressing itself wherever it’s found. Quick tempered, it is easy to ignite and highly inflammable. The sanguine are a dominant set, synergistic and adaptive in nature. When happy, they are happy to the extreme, when sad or moody, there’s no limit to their depression, but the tendency of the former is on the high side in most cases. They are your very happy neighbours, the very extroverted you, the most friendly and vibrant specie. Good in leadership, like fire, their radiance shines and guides the paths of those who follow them courtesy of their tendency to attract people to themselves.
However warm and collaborative they are in their reception, the same fire that gives warmth can still be an explosion.
2. THE MELANCHOLIC AS WATER.
Proudly the alter ego of the Sanguine, the melancholic is an opposite trait. A reserved, accommodating, more analytical trait. A perfectionist. It’s submissive and emotional nature likens the trait to the flow of water. Highly calculative and supporting, but a swing in their moods and they become a flood; an ocean that swallows anything in sight. In comparison to the Sanguine, they are more disciplined, to the choleric, a little less. Kind hearted, their quiet nature gives room for them to be underrated or walked upon. Their organized nature makes them a neat kind, a kind that wants the pen in the rack and not on the book. They over think and plan their lives in such a way that a change in their plans could cause a volcanic outburst. Highly sensitive, they are your nerds, your children that choose “rather to be alone” than play, high IQ doctors, excellent teachers and professions that require adequate dedication to humanity.Well, as much as you love to drink water, you wouldn’t want to mess with lots of water.
3. THE CHOLERIC AS EARTH.
Rocky, focused, strong and dynamic. Qualities of a great leader. Although, there should not be any superior temperament, but, the choleric makes it a norm for other temperaments to look up to him. Highly disciplined and dominant, they lead the pack with a competitive spirit. Their drive for power is limitless as they could push themselves to any extent. They are sometimes control freaks and hostile in their behavioral reactions to situations. Their power is in their strength, like earth, strong and hard, they frown at weaknesses. Life to them is either a win or a lose,no middle ground. A hot tempered set, only calmed by the gentleness of air; The Phlegmatic.Their display of anger is loud and rash, and no matter how good they command respect and how firm their leadership becomes, they may lose a lot of friends and followers in the process.
They are your strong willed friends, the self motivated you, your work conscious and extra pushy dad.
The earth still feel quakes and the toughest wall breaks. The same stone used to break can be used to build.
4. THE PHLEGMATIC AS AIR.
Let’s do something right now. Kindly wave your hand (left or right) across your face. Do a bit faster than you did for some time like you’re fanning yourself. You felt air right? Did it feel good? Yeah, it sure did.Friendly, quiet, easy going and subtle are the traits of a Phlegmatic. They win the best smiles, hardly the best laughs. Excellent at deception, as they can cover up a lot behind their surfaces. They could feel pain and still exude smiles. Slow, and less dedicated to a cause, they take life as it comes and accepts what it offers. They are patient, tolerant and submissive if they choose to. Like air, they bring comfort, peace and cool to their lovers. Depending on levels of trust, they become loyal friends, dependable and reliable, while in some cases, they are adamantly stubborn. Basically, their life is based on the reactions of people to them or experiences over time. In the presence of other extroverted types, they shy away in pretence of ignorance, but in their alone time, they harness the best of creativity and their thoughts are well calculated.
They are your peaceful neighbors, your composed and devoted spouse, your quiet crush, your non-academically inclined son and the very much introverted you.
Air brings lots of things our way. It could be odour or fragrance, smell or scent.
In conclusion, as I have stated before, that a person can possess two or more temperaments just as the Avatar could combine all four elements, but, a perfect blend would be two.
It is therefore necessary for everyone to know their basic temperaments in addition to their related elements, it’s disadvantages and advantages. To work on the weaknesses and improve the strengths for a better you and a balanced society.
